Mediator assigned to Kamloops union, Hudson's Bay labour dispute

As Kamloops Hudson’s Bay workers approach their fifth month of striking, the province has appointed a special mediator in an effort to secure a resolution to the labour dispute.

Last month, the workers announced they were stepping up their efforts and secured national support from the United Steelworkers union (USW) for a national campaign that targeted customers during Bay Days and urged them to support the cause by putting “pressure on management” to reach a deal and reopen the store.

However, to date, the union and Hudson’s Bay have not come to an agreement on wages.

On Friday, BC’s Minister of Labour Harry Bains said he has appointed David Schaub to mediate the ongoing dispute.

He will help in settling the terms of a collective agreement between the union and Hudson’s Bay.

“Schaub will work with the parties for up to 14 days to secure a resolution to the ongoing strike,” says a news release from the province.

“If a settlement cannot be reached within this timeline, he will issue recommendations to end the dispute with both parties having five days to either accept or reject those recommendations.”

Schaub will be required to report back to the labour minister within two weeks.
